Painless Migration From Ning.com | Where To & How?
Image via CrunchBase
Ning.com is going fully commercial by mid July 2010 and they no longer support free accounts. Most account owners are aware of this unfortunate change but the majority wouldn’t know what to do.
If you’re not willing to opt for a paid service on Ning.com, the question is how and where to move your networking site and members to?
I was in the same predicament a few weeks ago until I stumbled upon Grouply. As far as I am aware there’s no other platform that allow the easy migration from Ning.com.
For now the only snag is that Grouply doesn’t import blog posts. Other contents such as member profiles and images work beautifully.
Migration Steps
First, create an account at www.Grouply.com
Then from Manage > Management Menu, select “Migrate From Ning”.
From there on, just follow the steps and you should have your Ning’s members and images copied to Grouply.
There’s also an option to do bulk notification to all your Ning’s members about the migration.

Try http://grou.ps
I moved several ning sites to grou.ps, which gives the first 10 Gig of storage free. Everything gets moved, pictures, members, forums, blogs, comments on the forum and blog posts and pictures. grou.ps has a move from ning tool and all a site owner has to do is to upload the json files obtained from the ning archiver tool. Because the site owner doesn't upload the actual content, which could run into thousands of pictures and forum/blog posts uploading the json files doesn't take very long. After that, grou.ps bots take over the job of migrating the network. For my small networks, the migration was over in less than 12 hours. There's also a very easy option to migrate the ning.com template. This means the new grou.ps site looks practically like the ning.com site. If you wish to see what I mean, here are some of my new grou.ps sites: http://grou.ps/lccianphotos (from http://lccianphotos.ning.com, http://grou.ps/greennegros (from http://greennegros.ning.com), http://grou.ps/gspnegros (from http://gspnegros.ning.com).
What doesn't grou.ps do?
Photos and albums:
Grou.ps will allow you to create albums and post into albums but the pictures that get migrated all end up in one default album. Grou.ps is still working on a bulk editing tool so for the moment, you have to move photos one by one if you want to arrange the old ones into albums.
The photos in an album can be seen in a slide show but there's no embed code which will allow the user to show the album in another page or another website.
The sub-groups that existed in the ning network are also there but the same member can be listed several times in the same sub-group. The sub-group logos also got lost somewhere.
I actually haven't fully explored the new websites so I don't know if they are user friendly or not. I also cannot say that I really know much about the people behind grou.ps.
