A decision may not be easy as there are so many blogging systems to choose from. Here are some popular ones to name a few:
- WordPress
- Joomla
- Drupal
- well, plus many many others
These systems are also known as Content Management Systems (CMS) or sometimes called publishing platforms.
Every system above does very well with their basic features such as creating and managing users, blog posts, comments etc. If your requirement is a basic one, any one platform will do but the dilemma starts when you requirements go beyond the basics.
Some systems are better than other in certain areas and vice versa so knowing what they can offer will obviously help. My advise is - do your homework before jumping in.
I am familiar with WordPress and Drupal. I can say that WP is easier to handle if you are ok with having “lesser control” of your site as there are less “switches” for you to play around with.
One outstanding thing with WP is that there are abundant of “plugins” and most are available for free. These plugins allow you to customize your site in so many different ways for example there’s a plugin that will allow your site to become Search Engine friendly, another lets you trap spam comments and so on. They are too numerous to mention here.
On the other hand, Drupal gives you a lot more settings so you can customize your site relatively “a lot more”.
Joomla is quite “newbie-friendly” as setting up a new site is easy. What we get out-of-the-box is quite useable straight away. You’ll have more “controls” than what WordPress offers. I like Joomla for it’s good looking templates or layout.
Now, people say that - there’s no such thing as a free lunch. So typically the more control you have, the more complicated the system becomes and harder to manage.
If you’re a beginner, I suggest that you start with WordPress and grow up to Joomla or even Drupal later on.
